Jon Gardella, born in Cooperstown, New York in 1948 lives and works in the Netherlands. He is a sculptor, painter and a set designer. In 1968, he studied at the Academia di Belli Arti in Rome under professors Venanzo Crocetti and Pericle Fazzini. After that he continued his studies for 4 years at the Rijks Academy of Fine arts in Amsterdam with Professors Piet Esser and Paul Gregoire.
Gardella is regarded as a member of the renowned Dutch school of figurative-abstraction of The Rijks Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam. His generation, the third in this Dutch school is called 'The Group' .
The Dutch television program " Van Gewest tot Gewest" made a documentry about Gardella's art which is entitled "Movement in Sculpture". Gardella lives and works in the town of Garnwerd, which is located in the northern Netherlands.
Gardella's sculptures, drawings and paintings are known for his ability to capture dynamic movement. The motion and beauty of his work can be seen in his sketches of dancing models.
His work is a fine balance between the architecture of a building, a park or a square ( where the art form resides), and the actual requirements of any given commission. The end result is that the art piece and the environment are harmoniously brought together.
Jon is one of the few Americans to be commissioned by the Dutch government and town officials. His monumental bronze sculptures can be seen in public places throughout the Netherlands.
